Tragic Landslide in Sydney’s Blue Mountains Leaves Two Dead, Two Seriously Hurt
On Monday, the Wenthworth Falls trail turned deadly in the Blue Mountains national park, just west of Sydney. Two hikers — one a child — were killed and two more have been sent to the hospital with serious injuries.
Why It Happened
- Heavy rainfall over the past weeks has drenched the area
- These dunes are a hotspot for tourists — about 4 million folks visit each year, the highest for any Aussie national park
What The Police Reported
Detective Superintendent John Nelson, speaking to press from the Blue Mountains command, described the scene as “truly heartbreaking.” He added that a girl was being woken up, visibly rattled, from the wreckage. The track down the valley was “extremely slick” and unstable, making safe walking a real challenge.
Initially, a man and a boy lost their lives in the slide. Paramedics also had to winch out a woman and another child who were seriously injured.
Injury Details
- Hikers suffered head injuries and abdominal trauma before receiving emergency care
- The nationalities of the hikers remain unknown at this time
Community Response
Local families and park officials are calling for stricter safety measures. Some hikers are urging authorities to “give us the truth”—that might include clearer signage or better preparation for the inevitable wet season.
Stay tuned as investigators dig deeper into the exact cause and how many were blamed on the trail’s condition.
