Sad News from the Track
On Saturday morning, a tragic event unfolded at Singapore Athletics’ All Comers Meet 2—a 5,000m walk that started at 8 am and ended in heartbreak.
Who Was Involved?
- Lim Boon Huat – 50‑year‑old participant
- Three 18‑year‑old runners
Lim, who had been looking forward to the event, collapsed within the first kilometre.
What Happened?
First‑aiders were on the scene in a heartbeat, thanks to the medical team stationed at the Home of Athletics in Kallang. They sprang into action, performing CPR and using an AED before the SCDF ambulance arrived to transport him to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Despite their best efforts, Lim tragically succumbed at the hospital. The athlete on a nearby track witnessed the chaos but was focused on his own race, so he couldn’t see the full story.
Reactions from the Athletics Community
Singapore Athletics (SA) expressed deep sorrow, saying:
“We are deeply saddened by this incident. The well‑being of all participants is our top priority, and we will be standing by the family during this difficult time.”
SA also pledged to review safety protocols and ensure greater protection for athletes and officials in future events.
What Lies Ahead?
While the community mourns, they’re also taking steps to prevent such tragedies. The hope is that every athlete can finish a race without danger.
Bottom Line
Lim’s passing is a sobering reminder of how quickly a sporting event can turn into a crisis. The track community now remains united in support and in a committed effort to strengthen safety for all who take to the field.
