Why the Lone Independent Ran for Pioneer SMC

Cheang Peng Wah’s Rally: “I’m Not a Mole”

On July 4, before the General Election, resident engineer Cheang Peng Wah went live on Facebook to explain why he’s deciding to contest the Pioneer Single‑Member Constituency. He was up against Patrick Tay of the People’s Action Party (PAP) and Lim Cher Hong of the Progress Singapore Party (PSP).

Feeling a little beleaguered by rumors that he was a “mole” for the opposition, Cheang cut to the chase:

“There’s no mole here. I’m not a mole.” He repeated it a few times, even pointing at himself for good measure.

Below is a snapshot of the video he posted on Facebook (the original link was https://www.facebook.com/wahla/videos/10158530965196182/). Viewers could not help but laugh at his “no‑mole” chant.

Why He Says He Has an Equal Chance

  • None of the other candidates have served in Pioneer before.
  • Cheang believes every candidate—himself, Tay, and Lim—has an equal shot at winning and representing the voters.
  • He mentioned how “no one has a foot‑in‑the-door advantage” in this constituency.

The Deposit Dilemma

Some viewers started questioning whether Cheang would lose his election deposit if he failed to secure at least 12.5 % of the vote. He’s quick to say that “I’m pretty sure I won’t lose it.” In his own words, it’s a hypothetical situation and he doesn’t want to get swayed by it.

What Cheang Wants from Pioneer Voters

He urges the electorate to look beyond party lines and assess each candidate on their merits. Even if he’s elected, he reminds them that the ruling party will still hold a majority.

He says: “Vote for me if I seem like a reasonable person who makes sense.”
