Singapore Planes in Malaysian Airspace? No Strangest Fight, Just a Friendly Drill!
Mindef says: Singapore’s fighter jets were happily flying over southern Johor earlier this month because they all got the green lights from the Malaysian side.
Exercise Bersama Gold – The FPDA Power‑Up
This was all part of Exercise Bersama Gold, a big, multi‑nation drill that ran from Oct 4 to Oct 18. The Five‑Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA), which includes Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Britain, has been bragging about joint security for decades.
So Why the Media Hype?
- Malaysian MP Pasir Gudang’s Hassan Abdul Karim rang the alarm, asking the gov’t to look into a possible “incursion” of Singapore planes.
- He claimed he “had heard a lot of people saying they saw Singapore’s military jets zooming low over the airspace right next to Malaysia.”
- The chatter grew louder after Malaysia started re‑examining the Pulau Batu Puteh/ Pedra Branca dispute with Singapore.
But Mindef put the spotlight back on the training: all aircraft were authorised to cross borders, and the info was publicly shared by both countries’ aviation authorities a month earlier. “We’re just exercising together in the FPDA’s usual playground over Peninsular Malaysia and the waters near Singapore,” the Ministry added.
Numbers That Pack a Punch
- ≈ 2,600 troops from each country braced themselves.
- 6 maritime helicopters tipped the waters.
- 3 maritime patrol planes patroled the seas.
- 25 fighter jets performed high‑flying mayhem.
So the next time you hear a rumbling over Johor, remember: it’s a friendly fly‑by, not a diplomatic standoff.
