Low Thia Khiang Turns Up to Calm WP Concerns
After the Committee of Privileges handed over its hefty report on Thursday, former Workers’ Party (WP) chief Low Thia Khiang stepped in to put his supporters at ease. He’s reminding everyone that the WP has a growing pool of talent and that there’s no reason to panic.
“If the residents ask, I’ll answer”
Speaking to the Chinese-language Shin Min Daily News on Friday, Low, who stepped down as secretary‑general in 2018 and as an MP two years later, said:
“I’d love it if people ask me to come back and steer the WP ship. That’s what the committee said. Residents, feel free to send me a note; I’ll keep you in the loop.”
“We’re all pretty worried, but the WP is full of skilled folks, so let’s not sweat it.”
He didn’t rule out a comeback, but put the ball in the hands of his supporters. Some observers are already buzzing about the possibility of Low returning to help turn the tide.
What’s the Committee Gotting Todo?
- Raeesah Khan could face a $35,000 fine for lying in Parliament.
- Pritam Singh and Faisal Manap may be referred to the Public Prosecutor – perjury for Singh and contempt for Faisal.
- The panel found Singh had lied under oath (could be perjury) and Faisal’s refusal to answer questions could amount to contempt of Parliament.
In a quick Facebook blurt right after the report was released, Singh hinted that if he and Faisal have to be fined $2,000 or more, they could lose their seats in Parliament.
Singh’s Composure
Despite the looming threats, Singh, who was named Leader of the Opposition after the 2020 General Election, reassured the community that he and Faisal would keep doing their constituency work normally until the matter’s settled.
“I’ll keep going back to the people, nothing else. It’s just the normal routine until the questions are answered.”
Pictures of the Four Old‑School Heroes
On Saturday, Singh posted a photo of himself with Low, Hougang MP Dennis Tan, and his predecessor Png Eng Huat. The four had spent the morning at a condo reunion event in Hougang.
Developments Ahead
WP leaders and the speaker will be speaking out on the committee’s report on Tuesday, Feb 15 when Parliament debates and votes on whether to adopt the recommendations.
In short: there will be a lot of buzz ahead, but Low Thia Khiang’s calm reassurance is a welcome balm for worried supporters.
