ESM Goh Responds to Heated Reactions on Ministerial Pay, Stressing Talent Hunt Beyond Salary

Goh Chok Tong: Ministers’ Pay Sparks a “Saucy” Debate

Had a chat with the folks in South East District on August 2 and, yup, the veteran leader spilled the beans on ministerial salaries – saying they’re not cutting the deck enough to pull in top talent.

Online Roar!

  • Critics claim high pay could attract people chasing money instead of the good stomping job.
  • Others point out ministers already rake in world‑class wages.

Back on August 8, Goh posted on Facebook, tipping his hat to the “heated reactions”. “It shows Singaporeans care deeply and hold leaders accountable.” He welcomed diverse views and hinted at another forum – “when the time is right.”

Pay, the Right Money?

He insisted: “In crisis, people will step up, money won’t be the main pull. In calm times, personal dreams and lifestyle win.” He raved about the link between “quality and price” – from durian to defence gear. “I ran Singapore for 14 years as PM and still, leadership is the ticket to progress.”

Mediocrity Myth Busted

Goh clarified a misprint: “I never said those who can’t command high salaries are mediocre. I value people over brawn.” And he told one overseas medical student that salary does tell stories of talent but isn’t the whole picture. Character, motivation, commitment – these are the real cut‑throats.

The student was “seemed to be persuaded” and even offered to volunteer at Goh’s next Meet‑the‑People session. And Goh’s final line? “Let’s think hard about Singapore’s future. We deserve the best. Happy National Day!”
