Flash Flood in Singapore Takes Traffic by Storm

Late last night, sudden heavy showers turned several streets in Singapore into rivers, bringing traffic to a standstill and putting commuters on edge.

Where It Happened

  • Bedok area, especially around the junction with Changi Business Park
  • Upper Changi Road saw water levels reach knee‑high in some spots
  • Junction of Bedok Road and Upper Changi Road, as well as areas along Tampines Road, Sims Avenue, Jalan Nipah, and Arumugam Road

The Human Side

Street heroes: Some residents helped push stalled cars straight through the flood, as captured in a video from Stomp contributor Dean.

Firemen from a nearby station were also seen diverting traffic and pushing vehicles. One witness, Kai, praised the crew, saying, “My friend was outside the station and saw the firemen moving traffic and even pushing cars.”

Official Response

The Public Utilities Board (PUB) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) warned motorists about trouble at Jalan Nipah, where the water made the road impassable early Monday morning.

According to a tweet from PUB at 09:26 am, several waterways—Bedok Canal, Sungei Tongkang, and Sungei Kallang—were more than 90 % full, prompting a “high flood risk” alert for those areas.

What’s Next?

Drivers are advised to stay away from affected roads and to keep an eye on published updates from PUB and LTA.
