Tech Boss Under the Spotlight: NUS Student Raises a Red Flag
In a drama that could rival a reality show, a director from a local tech firm has found himself on the police’s radar after an NUS student came forward with a pretty serious complaint.
What the student claims
According to The New Paper, the director—who’s married but apparently looking for extra cash—offered the student double the standard internship stipend in exchange for coming along on a “business trip.” The catch? The trip was supposed to be covert, the student was told she couldn’t tell her school. Sounds like a plot twist straight out of a thriller!
The chain of events
- August 23: The New Paper runs the story.
- April: NUS receives the student’s allegation and files a police report.
- March: The university forwards a message hinting at some sexual misconduct involving a former intern—one that got tossed around campus and warned students away from the company.
- 2016–2017: Three other female students from different departments flag unethical practices. They quit the internship but chose not to chase the matter with the police.
Campus reaction
A NUS spokesperson made it crystal clear: “The university takes allegations of harassment very seriously. NUS’s priority is the safety and well‑being of its students, and we’ll keep digging.” She added that by May, the company had already been pulled from NUS’s primary job portal and two other NUS‑managed sites.
Three more universities followed suit:
- Lasalle College of the Arts & Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have taken the company off their portals.
- Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) will no longer approve internships with the firm.
- Singapore Management University (SMU) is still reviewing the situation.
Director’s side of the story
When reporters visited his home on July 24, he was understandably shocked and denied all the accusations. He claims he hasn’t even been contacted by the schools over the matter, and says he’s ready to confront them head‑on.
Bottom line
While the police investigate, the tech world will be watching. Will the director get a second chance, or is this the end of his career? One thing’s for sure: this saga has turned the campus into a hotbed of whispers and cautionary tales.
