BAFTA Pulls Bryan Singer’s Nomination Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations
London – The UK’s film watchdog, BAFTA, has put the brakes on “Bohemian Rhapsody” director Bryan Singer’s nomination for this weekend’s awards night after accusations of sexual misconduct surfaced.
Who’s the Drama?
- Song of the Queen – The biopic that was up for “Outstanding British Film.”
- Primary Nominee – Bryan Singer (52).
- Other nominees included producer Graham King and screenwriter Anthony McCarten.
In a late‑night revelation posted on BAFTA’s website, the academy confirmed that Singer’s nomination has been suspended “in light of recent very serious allegations.”
The Silence from the Director
Attempts to hear Singer’s side of the story fell flat. Calls to the California agent’s number were either disconnected or answered outside business hours, and no reply has come through from an agent or lawyer responding to queries.
What’s BAFTA Saying?
“BAFTA considers the alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with its values,” the statement read. “This has led to Mr. Singer’s suspended nomination.” Biasedely, the message also added: “BAFTA notes Mr Singer’s denial of the allegations. The suspension will remain in place until the outcome of the allegations has been resolved.”
There was no elaboration on the details of the allegations themselves.
Fresh Allegations Spark New Drama
- The Atlantic last month flagged four men accusing Singer of sexual misconduct, including claims of molestation and seduction involving minors.
- Singer rebutted the attack, labeling the article a “homophobic smear piece” in a statement published by Deadline.
Past Controversies
- While directing “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Singer was dropped in late 2017 after “clashes on set”. 20th Century Fox temporarily halted filming during the final weeks because of his unexpected unavailability.
- Later, Singer claimed the studio denied him time to “deal with pressing health matters concerning one of my parents,” and stated his contract was terminated.
What’s Next for the Awards?
Despite Singer’s suspension, the film remains in the running for “Outstanding British Film.” BAFTA confirmed that the other nominees – Graham King and Anthony McCarten – will still be considered.
The awards ceremony will take place in London this Sunday.
