Escalator Drama at Tampines 1 Mall: Stroller Wheels Take the Stage
On Saturday night, a quiet evening in Tampines 1 Mall turned into an unexpected spectacle when the escalator’s steps at the second-floor landing split apart at 9:40 pm. Four shoppers were riding the escalator at that moment, but miraculously none were injured.
The Suspected Culprit
- Security footage shows an unfolded stroller resting on the escalator’s steps.
- Its wheels apparently jammed the moving platform, causing the steps to dislodge and the machine to hit its safety brake.
- “Wheels on a stroller may jam escalator steps, triggering a safety stop,” said Ms. Maggie Chua, the mall’s general manager.
Immediate Response
- The escalator was shut down right away for a safety assessment.
- The Building and Construction Authority was informed, and the mall is coordinating closely with the vendor, Otis, to investigate.
- Shoppers who witnessed the incident were left in a state of shock, while a nearby tenant reported hearing loud noises from the escalator.
Commitment to Safety
AsiaMalls, which manages Tampines 1, re‑affirmed its dedication to the community’s well‑being. The incident is deemed isolated, and the management assures that every precaution is being taken to prevent future mishaps.
