- A*Star Scientist Sentenced to Jail and Fine for Public Sexual Act in Condo Common Area
Scientist Sentenced to Jail After Shockingly Bad Misadventures
What Happened
- Xie Danpeng (31), a researcher at A*Star, went full-on “surprise party” mode in his condominium’s common area on Nov 1.
- The stingy act didn’t stop there: he also appeared naked to a woman (32) at another building in June of last year.
- He was caught by a sharp‑eyed resident who recorded a video and saw his moves from 8–9 a.m. on April 12 at Barossa Gardens.
- Another 26‑year‑old neighbour told her boyfriend, who then called the police. Xie fled back to his unit and his unit was instantly enforced.
- Even after being barred from the premises on April 14, he slipped back in five days through an unlocked door → trotting into trash‑collecting alley.
Other Illegal Shenanigans
- Xie also stole a bicycle worth around $600 from a roadside near Alexandra Retail Centre on April 10. The bike is still missing.
- He pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exposure, one for criminal trespass, and a separate count of dishonest misappropriation.
Legal Consequences
- He’s now on 10 weeks’ jail plus a fine of $1,600. Each sexual exposure offence carries up to 1 year in jail and a hefty fine.
- A*Star has suspended him since July and is running a full internal disciplinary review that will factor in this sentence.
- Deputy Public Prosecutor Stephanie Koh noted that the justice system moved quickly once the video evidence flooded in.
Immediate Reactions
- A*Star has dropped a staunch statement, saying it “takes a firm stand” against any legal misstep.
- Public outrage grew as residents demanded stricter security – and tougher penalties for that blurry line between curiosity and crime.
What’s Next
- Authorities are still hunting the missing bike and confirming the trustworthiness of neighbors.
- Internal investigations may lead to changes in staff vetting and security protocols.
