China Sees Biggest Surge in Local Covid Cases in Almost a Month

China Faces a New Spike in Covid‑19 Cases in Inner Mongolia

On November 30, China recorded 91 new local Covid‑19 cases that actually had symptoms, the biggest single‑day jump in almost a month.

Where the Numbers Lie

All 91 cases were found in Inner Mongolia, the northern region that borders Russia. Over the three days from Nov 28 to 30, the province reported 132 symptomatic cases, with over 70 % of them in the small border town of Manzhouli.

Manzhouli Takes Action

Feeling the heat, the city quickly did a few things:

  • Locked residents in place – no leaving the town.
  • Halted most railway imports that weren’t containerised.
  • Shut down a slew of public venues.

With Beijing still holding on to its “zero‑tolerance” policy, it’s all about stopping the spread before it spreads.

A Quick Look at the Big Picture

By the end of the day, mainland China tallied 98,824 symptomatic cases, a mix of local and overseas arrivals. The death toll stayed at 4,636.

Although the numbers may seem small compared to outbreaks elsewhere, Inner Mongolia’s rapid response reminds us that sometimes a quick, strict approach can pay off.
