Brexit Battle: MPs Under Threat
The Thrilling World of Parliamentary Politics
It’s a showstopper. Picture this: the House of Commons is lit up, MPs are debating the “EU (Withdrawal) Bill,” and some are clutching their phones because the world’s most dangerous thing is a death threat. Strap in, because it’s about to get wild.
The Conspiracy of Conflict
- Anna Soubry – The Conservative rebel who’s had to go into full-on military escort mode, riding a squad of six undercover officers, for a public event. She’s earned that level of security “because people keep telling her the same things over and over” (Ok, see).
- Police calls piling up – The number of death threats is on a non‑stop incline. Soubry even had to summon the police because a brand new threat came in on Monday. She responded with fire‑staying tweets like “Death threats becoming routine & making many of us more resolute #StandingFirm #MeaningfulVote.”
- One MP’s rebellion paused – At least one Member of Parliament shook off her urge to oppose the government’s draft because the threat had her thinking seriously about “personal safety.” It shows just how powerful these doomsday emails can be.
- Three convicts – In a twist that would make a thriller movie jealous, three guys found guilty of harassing Soubry were caught. One of them got an eight‑week jail stint. Their main weapon? Racist, menacing emails directed at a total of six MPs – one of these lines too pointedly named “treachery over Brexit.”
- Jo Cox’s haunting echo. Each of the three also referenced the tragic murder of Labour MP Jo Cox by a neo‑Nazi that happened 180 days before the 2016 referendum. (If that doesn’t give you the chills…)
- From hate letters to 600 rape threats. Labour’s feminist icon Jess Phillips crapped out a slate of dark messages. She’d picture herself on a “600‑threat” charge, value‑punching ourselves, but happily didn’t actually get shot?
- Journalistic villainy. Right‑wing papers calling MPs “Enemies of the People” or “Mutineers” gave this soup a dangerous seasoning. The Daily Express, in particular, urged MPs to ignore the will of the people at their peril—warning alert!
- Legit threats to nobody be litigated. While the government states, “This is a threat, pure and simple,” the unwavering almost pissed by some like cousin Dominic Grieve feels the hysteria must stop or we risk turning a normal comment into a constitutional crisis. He thus aside a press conference on Sky News to say “Parliament can’t do its job if every thing becomes a constitutional crisis and accuses anyone who disagrees with the government’s approach with treason.”
(and basically, “Someone can abud your bubble with Twitter or just give away a significant message, but we’re as good and women now.)
