Donated Breast Milk Benefits 600 Singapore Babies – Singapore News

How Singapore’s Milk Bank is Giving Babies a Boost

Since its grand opening last August, the Human Milk Bank at KK Women’s & Children’s Hospital has roped in more than 400 generous mums. Their milk has rescued over 600 tiny warriors whose mothers could’t churn out enough nourishment on their own.

The Numbers You’ll Want to Know

  • 400+ donors recruited in just a year.
  • More than 600 vulnerable babies received lifesaving milk.
  • Incidence of necrotising enterocolitis dropped from 5.8 % to 1.8 % among around 200 pre‑term babies—a huge win for the most fragile!

Why Breast Milk Wins Over Formula

Formula may tempt your nursing bag, but it can throw a tantrum in the tummy of a sick or premature infant. Breast milk, on the other hand, is practically a “superhero suit” for little ones. It’s packed with enzymes, nutrients, growth factors, hormones, and antibodies that play a starring role in digestion, development, and disease prevention.

Pre‑term Babies on the Rise

While the city’s hospitals recorded a climb from 11 % to 13.5 % in pre‑term births (about 1,500 babies last year), the Milk Bank has been working hard to give these infants a fighting chance.

Who Gets the Milk?

  • Pre‑term babies from KKH, Singapore General Hospital, and National University Hospital.
  • Critically ill infants with low birth weight, congenital heart disease, or gastrointestinal challenges.
  • Only Singaporeans or permanent residents born in the three hospitals are eligible.

How Much Milk is Actually Dispatched?

Dr Chua Mei Chien shared that, on average, each recipient receives 2.9  litres of donated milk over a two‑week period.

Funding the Feed‑Forward

All of this juice came from a $1.37 million project spearheaded by the Temasek Foundation Cares over three fiscal years. Every bottle is rigorously screened: donors get blood tests, the milk is checked for bacterial contamination, pasteurised, and then ready to be delivered for free.

Beyond the Hospital Walls

Ms Woon Saet Nyoon, the charity’s chief executive, has plans to extend the program to babies in tough environments—those whose mothers face infections, medical treatments, or substance addiction.

Real‑World Hero: A Mother’s Story

Aileen Gonzalez, 39, is both a donor and a recipient. She had two premature daughters; the older, now five, was settled on formula, while her six‑month‑old received milk from the bank. She says:

“Even though it’s from another mum, I think breast milk still contains the best nutrients for the child.”
