Free Rides on the New 11‑Station Stretch of Thomson‑East Coast Line
Starting Friday, commuters can hop on the loop between Stevens and Gardens by the Bay without paying a dime. The preview runs from 10 am to 9 pm, giving everyone a taste of the soon‑to‑open third stage of the Thomson‑East Coast Line (TEL).
What’s Happening?
- The line is a standalone loop that will launch revenue service on Sunday.
- During the free‑ride period, you can start and finish your journey at any of the 11 new stations.
- If you’re coming from an existing MRT line (like the rest of TEL from Woodlands North to Caldecott), you’ll need to tap out on the old route and walk into the new station via the linkways.
- Between Caldecott and Stevens, a complimentary shuttle bus will shuttle travelers every 10 minutes.
Bus Network Tweaks
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will keep a close eye on how people use the new line, especially buses that mirror the train route. Services such as 162, 167, and 75 already double up on parts of the TEL, and LTA hints they might tweak or trim these routes in the future to streamline bus usage and free up resources elsewhere.
Past Adjustments
- In 2020, after the Downtown Line opened, LTA softened plans to cut bus services in Bukit Panjang following protests from over 5,000 residents.
- By December 2021, buses 22, 66, and 506 were shortened after ridership dipped post-DTL Stage 3, saving about $9.5 million in subsidies annually.
First‑ and Last‑Mile Boost
To help commuters get to the brand‑new TEL stations, the LTA will revamp connections like rerouting bus 400 to travel through Straits View and Park Street in the Central Business District, making a hop to Shenton Way station smoother.
Event Highlights
On Friday, fill your calendar with:
- An interactive digital game playable at all 11 stations.
- A photo exhibition awaiting visitors at Orchard station.
- Everything dubbed Rail Day Out in the City.
