Florida Condo Collapse: 9 Dead, 150 Missing Amid Deadly Disaster

SURFSIDE, Fla., June 27 – The official death toll from the partial collapse of a high-rise condominium complex near Miami rose to nine on Sunday (June 27), with more than 150 people still missing, as rescue teams picked through the rubble for a fourth day without finding further signs of life.

What caused nearly half the 12-story building to cave in on itself in the wee hours of Thursday as residents slept has yet to be determined, but a 2018 engineer’s inspection report found major structural deterioration in the parking garage beneath the 40-year-old tower.

Officials in Surfside, the shore town near Miami where the building stood along the beach, said hope remained that rescuers would yet discover survivors in air pockets that may have formed in the pancaked debris.

Even so, Fire Chief Alan Cominsky said on Sunday crews had yet to find such voids in the rubble, or any signs of life.

“It’s an extremely difficult situation,” Cominsky said. “Our rescue teams are nonstop, doing all that we can, searching every area, every bit of hope, to see if we can find a live victim.”

Two large cranes and two backhoes on Sunday joined in the debris-removal efforts that had previously been conducted essentially by hand by teams also using rescue dogs, sonar, drones and infrared scanners as they gingerly tunneled through the ruins.<img alt="" data-caption="A general view of a partially collapsed residential building as the emergency crews continue search and rescue operations for survivors, in Surfside, near Miami Beach, Florida, US on June 27, 2021.

Miami‑Dade Overlooks the Gloom: Rescue Teams Keeping Hope Alive

What the Mayor Disclosed

Mayor Daniella Levine Cava stepped onto the scene, surrounded by cracked concrete and twisted metal that once cradled families in the planned Champlain Towers South. With the remaining structure looming like a haunted cast‑iron skeleton, she shared the latest on the catastrophe.

Rescue Efforts

According to the mayor, six to eight rescue squads are tirelessly combing the rubble each day. The teams rotate like a relay race, keeping the fresh energy for the grave‑fairy that is ending. “Hundreds of volunteers stand by, ready to jump in as needed,” she noted, underscoring the relentless effort.

Tragic Numbers

  • Deaths: 9 – a rising figure that stirs all of Florida.
  • Missing: Over 150 – the search will need all hands to surface.

International Support

The emergency field is a global family affair. Experts from Israel and Mexico have joined the mission, turning the rescue into an international endeavor. Amid the urgency, a U.S. flag perched on a crane flutters like a feeling of solidarity, while visitors’ve left humble floral offerings beside a beach barrier to keep the chaos at bay.

Feel the Pulse

Even in the fog of disaster, the scene feels almost like a scene out of a slow‑motion weather‑report binge‑watch. We bring you the living portrait—bones of the building, the hum of rescue engines, and a stubborn grain of hope that refuses to leave the scene.

Fire abates

Fire Tamed, Storms Still Tossing the Rescue

By Sunday morning, the fiery mess that had basically bulldozed rescuers’ path had finally cooled off. The mayor announced that teams had dug a trench right through the wreckage, creating a fire‑free zone to separate smoldering debris from the rest of the chaos. Even so, the weekend’s thunderstorms kept the search on a little detour.

Who’s Gone?

  • Age 54‑83 – Four victims were confirmed, ranging from a 54‑year‑old then‑57‑year‑married partner to an 83‑year‑old resident.
  • Profile A Little League baseball coach who probably aired some life‑saving drills, and a mother of a 15‑year‑old boy who made a dramatic “pulled‑alive” exit from the collapsed building.

Survivors & Their Lucky Stories

Only wreckage‐cut fragments have surfaced since the early hours. One lucky soul, Erick de Moura, fondly recalled how he was at his girlfriend’s place in Miami Beach—just under two miles away—when the collapse hit. “Only by God,” he told Reuters. “To me, this is a miracle.”

Remembering the Missing

On a nearby fence, a gallery of missing photos opened up with flowers and heartfelt messages. One handmade sign read, “The Lord is My Refuge”, while another said, “Surfside God is with you”—a quick nod to both faith and community spirit.

Champlain Towers North Keeps a Safe Distance

Some folks are still in the sister building at Champlain Towers North, where the city only issued a voluntary evacuation. An inspector found nothing immediately glaringly wrong. Yet Mayor Charles Burkett emphasized, “I don’t know if I’d be comfortable staying in that building until we’ve done a thorough review.”

Miami‑Dade Sets Up 40‑Year‑Old Building Safety Check

On Saturday, authorities announced that all structures older than four decades in Miami‑Dade County will undergo a strict audit in the next month. The goal? Make sure no building is a ticking time bomb.

Why the Scrutiny?

  • Deadly History in Surfside – The recent collapse of Champlain Towers South has left everyone uneasy.
  • Back‑dated Damage – An engineer’s 2018 review flagged major structural cracks beneath the pool deck and concrete decay in the underground garage.
  • Previous Repairs? Not Enough – Those findings were meant to guide a repair plan for the same year, but the disaster proved otherwise.

Expert Take

Gregg Schlesinger, a construction‑law whiz who’s known for tackling roof‑failure cases, weighed in: “The flaws listed in that 2018 report were clearly the prime suspects behind the tragedy.”

What This Means for Residents

If your building turns up in the audit, you’ll see a thorough inspection of foundational support, roof integrity and underground structures. It’s a rigorous check designed to spot problems before they snap.

Stay Informed, Stay Safe

Keep an eye on your building’s age and any announcements from the county. It’s a good reminder: age isn’t just a number— it’s a safety check.

Condo Crises: The Tale of a Tower in Trouble

Ever wonder what happens when your skyline block starts to sag? Well, the folks at Donna DiMaggio Berger—our resident condo‑lawyer—waved a friendly hand over the 2018 audit. She told the board that the crumbs of trouble were pretty ordinary for a building born in the boom of the 1990s.

Boardroom Drama (Inside)

  • All the board members live right inside the tower, tossing their families around the hallways.
  • They’re so used to watching the skyline that they didn’t even blush at the report’s list of wobblings.

Money Talk: $9.1 Million to Save the Building

The damage, as the report pointed out, was hefty—about nine million dollars, or roughly twelve point two million Singapore dollars. The good news? They had already kicked off the roof swap. The bad news? The pandemic slid into the action like an uninvited guest, leaving the job on a roller coaster.

Floating Facts (With IT Help)

Florida International University professor Shimon Wdowinski took a cue from satellite telemetry dating back to the nineties. His numbers? The tower wereching, losing between one and three millimetres each year. In contrast, the nearby condos? Oh, they were as still as a statue on a quiet hill.

Legal Labyrinth & Real Realities

Ryan Schlesinger, fiddling with the legalities, said you could expect a maze of investigations and perhaps a courtroom brawl in the future—or at least that the story would come to light eventually. He summed it up like this:

“We know one thing: a structural failure happened.”

“But we also know it shouldn’t have happened,” he added.

All in all, the tower’s saga feels like a blockbuster plot: suspense, tangible financial tension, and, at the heart of it, a lesson about how old buildings can hurt—just in the way an old joke does: slow, unrelenting, and big on drama.
