Singapore Teen Faces Court After Vicious Threats Against EPL Star

On Monday, 3 May, a 19‑year‑old Singaporean named Derek Ng De Ren turned up in court, charged for a string of terrifying messages aimed at Brighton forward Neal Maupay and his family.

What the Court Heard

  • Ng allegedly sent threatening posts via Instagram while in Singapore.
  • On 24 June, he mouthed: “You think you’ll get away after injuring Leno? No way, bruv… But hang on, you’ll be safe; you won’t get hurt.”
  • He added, “It’s more fun watching you feel pain when your loved ones suffer.”
  • Three days earlier, Maupay had netted the winning goal against Arsenal, a game that saw keeper Bernd Leno exit the pitch injured after a tussle with the French national.
  • On 26 June, a chilling note read: “Your family will be attacked later in the day, just watch.”
  • On 1 July, he sent yet another menace: “You think reporting my account will keep you safe? I will kill you and your family.”

The Premier League had already tipped off the Singapore Police after uncovering that the savage online abuse was coming from an IP address linked to a Singapore residence.

Next Steps and Potential Punishment

Ng intends to plead guilty, and his case has been postponed to 31 May. For each harassment charge, the maximum penalty is six months behind bars and a fine of up to $5,000.

While the court proceedings will bring justice, the headlines underscore how quickly digital insults can become dangerous threats. And as always, a note of caution: mockery on social media is not only rude—it can have real‑world fallout. Keep it classy, folks.
