Rina Sawayama’s Brit Awards Breakthrough
London – Rina Sawayama, the Japanese‑born star who’s called Britain home for 26 years, has snagged a spot in the running for the Rising Star prize at this year’s Brit Awards. She did it by firing up a rule change that finally makes her eligible.
What’s at Stake?
- Rina Sawayama – 30, the artist whose debut album was named one of NME’s 2020 best.
- Griff – 20, a fresh face who earned a nomination for the Ivor Novello Rising Star award last year.
- Pa Salieu – 23, the rapper who topped BBC Music’s Sound of 2021 list.
The prize, formerly dubbed the Brits Critics’ Choice, will go to one of these three bright‑eyed talents on March 19. Past winners include heavy‑hitters like Adele, Sam Smith and Celeste.
From “Not Eligible” to “Nominated”
Before this rule tweak, Rina had been stuck outside the Brit awards machine because she doesn’t hold a British passport. British Phonographic Industry (BPI) said that anyone who’s been a permanent resident for over five years can now claim that golden ticket.
“I literally fell to the floor when I found out I’d been nominated for Rising Star,” Rina told a statement. “It feels like tears of joy and a big‑hearted win for future artists like me.”
Coming Up
The Brit Awards will light up the scene in May, celebrating the very best of Brit‑centric pop. Keep an eye out for the award winners, and maybe tune in for a surprise or two.
