New Extra Security at Singapore MRT Stations
Heads up, train riders! Starting next Monday (Nov 12), some MRT stops will have you check out a metal detector and swap your bag for an X‑ray scan before you even hit the fare gates.
What’s the Deal?
- Six‑month trial across up to six stations at a time (and eventually all lines).
- Goal: gather data to make future checks smoother and less of a daily hassle.
- Commuters and transport pros will drop their thoughts to fine‑tune next steps.
Not just trains—by year‑end, bus stops will get handheld metal detectors too, thanks to Chief Executive Ngien Hoon Ping (who also chairs the Public Transport Security Committee). “We’re talking about rides that carry millions every day—let’s keep them safe from any questionable items,” he says.
Exercise Alert: Dec 5 – “Station Guard”
At Hougang MRT (North‑East Line) from 10 am–4 pm, some of you will be rerouted through Exit A or B. There, you’ll undergo the same detector and X‑ray routine.
- See it as the third round this year of the “Station Guard” drills.
- All in the spirit of the SGSecure movement—boosting resilience and safety.
- Reviewing operators’ checks, plans, and readiness for any hiccups.
Bottom line: it’s all about keeping Singapore’s public transport a safe haven while making sure the security pans don’t slow the whole system down.
