Marina Bay Fireworks Cancelled Again, Disappointing New Year\’s Eve Spectacle – Singapore News

Singapore Gets a New Kind of Countdown – No Fireworks, Just Lighter Fun

Yo, Singapore! Put your pyrotechnics to rest this year – it’s a fireworks‑free New Year’s Eve at Marina Bay. The city’s team wants to keep crowds in check and curb the spread of Covid‑19.

What’s the Plan?

  • Skip the big, bright fireworks over Marina Bay.
  • Instead, light up your calendar with local heartland fireworks.
  • Keep the details coming – the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) is on the ball.

This is the second year in a row our iconic countdown has gone solo without the usual sparkles. The deal? You’ll enjoy the spectacle from home, or wherever you’re comfortable.

Catch the Show on TV or Online

  • Rundown: Mediacorp’s “Let’s Celebrate 2022” special on TV and online.
  • Highlights: Select heartland fireworks + behind‑the‑scenes shots from Marina Bay.

Lights, Music, and A Cool Visual Boom

But hold on – the vibe isn’t a dud. The Shine a Light feature is back to keep everyone dazzled.

  • What it is: 60 beams of light striking The Promontory floor.
  • When: Kicking off Dec 1, running nightly until Dec 31.

We’re also rolling out Share The Moment – a nightly light projection show from Dec 26 to 31.

  • Where it lights up: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, ArtScience Museum, and the Merlion.
  • Why it’s special: Local students’ creative artworks making the facades come alive.

Why the Shift?

According to URA,

it’s all about letting folks visit at their own pace while keeping crowds to a minimum.

Executive’s Word

Lim Eng Hwee, URA Chief Executive, said in a statement: “This year’s countdown pays tribute to the partnerships Singaporeans have forged through these challenging times, and signals a better 2022 for Singapore and Singaporeans all together. As public health and safety remain a priority, we welcome visitors to the bay throughout the month of December and encourage all to enjoy the countdown from the comfort of their home this New Year’s Eve.”

Stay Warm and Celebrate!

So gather your family, order some cookies, and watch the big screen spin its brand‑new light show. Because who needs fireworks when you’ve got a whole city lighting up in a fuse of creativity? Cheers to a safe, sparkling—and quieter—2022!
