Omicron Surges Ahead of Delta, South African Virus Expert Predicts

Omicron: The New Contender

South Africa’s Set‑back (or Expectation?)

  • Global alarm bells have been ringing louder than a choir of owls after Omicron hit the headlines.
  • Travel bans are tightening so much that even the airline industry’s nerves run wild – all because we fear a new spike in infections that could swamp hospitals.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Omicron a “high-risk” candidate for upcoming surges.

What the Health Chief Is Saying

Adrian Puren, the acting director of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), asked himself: “What will beat Delta?” He turns to Omicron as the prime suspect.

He’s hoping, and we’re hoping, that within four weeks we’ll know if Omicron can dodge vaccines or prior infections, and if it’s fancier or flatter than the other variants.

Meanwhile, doctors in South Africa say the symptoms look pretty mild: just a little dry cough, a fever, and those “night sweats” that make you feel like you’re in a sauna posed on a lake.

Is Omicron Already Chasing Delta?

  • Right now we have only 87 Omicron genomes in the country.
  • But the numbers are rising – especially in Gauteng, the heartiest province with the largest population.
  • Last month, Delta’s peak hit just over 26,000 daily cases.
  • Omicron promises to spark a fourth wave, with infections hitting 10,000+ a day by the end of the week.

Some Caution (Because We Love Health)

Clinical microbiologist Anne von Gottberg gave an update:

“We’re seeing lots of kids under two having Covid admissions, but we’re not linking it straight to Omicron yet.”

“Some of those cases predate Omicron, and there’s been a recent influenza uptick. We need to be super careful about blaming Omicron alone.”

Why Africa Bassed It Out Early

South Africa sent the world the Omicron scare signal pretty fast – a brave thrust that keeps many nations on the watchful edge. Even so, the travel restrictions are chewing on the country’s vital tourism income.

So far, we’ve seen almost 3 million infections and just over 89,000 deaths across the African continent – the highest by far.

What’s Next?

We’ll keep you posted as scientists decode Omicron’s behavior over the next few weeks. Until then, don’t panic, keep your mask on, and stay tuned for more updates. Cheers to staying healthy – even if we’re in the midst of a global infodemic!
