Anytime Fitness Gym Snares a Little Omicron Trouble
In a surprising twist, the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) noted a possible Omicron cluster at the Anytime Fitness gym located inside Bukit Timah Shopping Centre.
The Three Cases
- 21‑year‑old student – Attends At‑Sunrice GlobalChef Academy but hasn’t been to school recently.
- 24‑year‑old – Unemployed, no travel history.
- 18‑year‑old Ngee Ann Polytechnic student – Last school day was Dec 15.
All three are fully vaccinated, report the MOH, and have only mild symptoms. Each tested preliminarily positive for Omicron, with a third case still awaiting final results.
How It’s Caught
MOH says all three visited the gym between Dec 15 and Dec 17. No recent travels were noted, so the spread is likely local.
What’s Next: Contact Tracing & Quarantine
- Close contacts identified by the gym staff will be put into a short quarantine.
- Any other gym visitors between Dec 15–17 will receive a health risk warning (HRW) and an invitation for a one‑time PCR test.
- Visitors are urged to monitor their health closely, cut down on social interactions for 14 days, and seek medical help if symptoms flare.
Omicron Landscape in Singapore
To date, there are 71 confirmed Omicron cases in Singapore: 65 imported and 6 local.
MOH reminds everyone: “High transmissibility means more cases across borders and communities. Stay vigilant and keep boosting your shields.”
Current Situation Snapshot
- 195 new infections announced Monday (Dec 20), with 45 being Omicron (3 local, 42 imported).
- Two deaths bring the Covid‑19 death toll to 815.
- Community cases: 141; migrant worker dormitories: 5; imported: 49.
- Hospitalisation: 506 total, 29 critical, 7 under close monitoring, 57 on oxygen.
- ICU utilisation: 52.8 % (up from 43.8 % previous day).
- Weekly infection growth rate: 0.56 (steady).
Overall, Singapore has logged a total of 276,105 cases to date. The weekly growth rate, a number below one, signals that new cases are decreasing—a trend that has held since Nov 13.
Bottom Line
While the gym cluster adds to the list of Omicron sightings, the response—contact tracing, quarantine, and health warnings—keeps the spread in check. Keep your filters on, stay healthy, and remember that the best defence is a double dose of stories (and vaccines).
