Hack alert: Authy’s two‑factor app coped a major data breach
What went down?
Twilio’s security app, Authy, had a big whoop last month when a hacker slipped into the system. The attack exposed up to 33 million cell phone numbers.
Originally the app used to run on desktops, but it’s now only available on Android and iPhone.
“The breach was limited and confined to phone numbers,” Twilio explained in a blog post.No other private data, like passwords or user credentials, were compromised.
What does this actually mean?
How can you protect yourself?
After the hack, Twilio claims to have closed the endpoint and stopped allowing for unauthenticated requests. Authy users are encouraged to update to the latest version or contact the support team if they are unable to access their accounts. TechCrunch gave a figure of 33 million while Twilio did not reveal the numbers.
