Singapore Citizens Get Land VTL to Malaysia Starting Dec 20

Singapore and Malaysia Open their Borders to the Vaccinated Crowd – No Quarantine!

Starting next week (Dec 20), any Singaporean who’s finished their shots can step straight across the Causeway into Malaysia without having to wait out a quarantine. The other way around, Malaysians who’ve been vaccinated can get a green light into Singapore, all thanks to the newly broadened Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL).

Who Can Jump Through the Gates?

  • Citizens, permanent residents and long‑term pass holders of the destination country.
  • No other travelers (like tourists on a holiday) can use the land route—though they still have the option to fly via the air VTL.

Testing Rules Remain Tight (But Friendly)

Both sides keep their testing procedures as solid as before:

  • Singapore: 7‑day rapid test regime – daily antigen tests from Day 1 to Day 7, with the 3rd and 7th day done at a certified centre.
  • Malaysia: 6‑day daily test routine, supporting the same level of caution.

Why the Pause? Reflex on the Past

As the news came out, trade minister Gan Kim Yong hit pause: “We’re not opening up the borders for a flood of people like the pre‑pandemic era; we’re giving families a reunification boost.”

He also reminded travelers heading to Johor Bahru on day‑trip excursions to weigh the risks carefully. “Just spend a day? Think it through. Tests are on the line.”

Future Prospects

It isn’t a full-on border reopening yet: Malaysia’s land VTL still operates only on designated buses. Talks are underway to explore train‑based travel, but nothing is set in stone.

Bottom line: for the vaccinated, step across the Causeway or hop onto a flight, but remember to keep your test kit handy. And don’t forget the purpose—reuniting families—and that’s better than a date with your favorite airline!
