Singapore couple faces abuse allegations after only 11 days of hiring a domestic helper.

Singapore Court Facing an Un‑usual & Drama‑Filled Case of Maid Abuse

Who’s Involved?

  • Nachammai Selva Nachiappan – 39‑year‑old primary school teacher
  • Arunachalam Muthiah – 41‑year‑old husband
  • Ms Hla Hla Myaing – 37‑year‑old domestic helper from Myanmar

The Shocking Allegations

Just a few weeks after Ms Hla Hla Myaing started working in November 2018, the couple allegedly turned the kitchen into a scene straight out of a slap‑stick film – but with very real consequences.

  • Nachammai supposedly threw a hot ladle straight at the maid’s right hand.
  • She also hit her face with a hanger and used a broken ruler against her head.
  • Arunachalam allegedly kicked and punched the same maid.

A Whirlwind of Long Hours

Ms Hla Hla Myaing described a grueling schedule: 4:30 am to 11:30 pm every day around a condo in Jalan Mata Ayer. That’s nearly 19 hours of work for one person! It was her very first job in Singapore.

Kitchen Chaos of June 25, 2018

While washing plates, the maid noticed Nachammai’s “angry” expression as she stirred a pot. With only the two of them in the kitchen, tensions escalated. The maid tried to explain, “I don’t know how to cook Indian food,” but the teacher was not in the mood for a cooking tutorial.

We’re Not Keeping Secrets (or Maid Agency Contracts)

In early August, the couple allegedly took her back to the maid agency, claiming dissatisfaction with her performance. Ms Hla Hla Myaing said she didn’t want to work for them and was transferred to another household – so sorry about the ‘handoff’ hassle!

Government Response

The Ministry of Education (MOE) promised an internal review. A spokesperson said, “We take staff misconduct very seriously. Disciplinary action, including dismissal from service, will be taken where standards are breached.”
MOE is on standby to interview teachers, schools, and communal outskirts.

The Oddball Court–Facing Interpreter Story

During the trial, the interpreter was replaced after witnesses testified that he might have given Ms Hla Hla Myaing some “loose change” for lunch. Judge Eddy Tham warned, “It’s unwise for an interpreter to give money to witnesses. A new interpreter is necessary.”

Legal Consequences

Using an instrument to assault a maid can land an offender behind bars for up to 10½ years and, if applicable, a fine or a caning. Since Nachammai is a woman, caning does not apply – but the jail terms are still severe.

Case Status

The trial is set to continue on Tuesday, with court dates still under scrutiny. The story remains under tight media coverage, with a focus on the serious nature of domestic abuse in Singapore.
