Unexpected $50 Surprise: A Taxi Tale
Peter Quek, a seasoned driver with ComfortDelGro, got more than just a tip last Monday. He spotted a $50 bill on an 8.40‑dollar trip and wondered if the passenger had accidentally dropped a $10.
What happened?
- Peter was heading from Waterloo Street to Tyrwhitt Road at about 2.45 pm.
- His passenger handed him a hefty $50.
- When Peter opened with a funny “Did you mean $10?” the woman simply replied, “Don’t worry, keep it.”
Is this the norm?
Peter, who’s been on the road since 2015 and joined the company in 2017, says the “50‑bucks, keep the change” moments are as rare as a blue moon.
He laughs, “I get a handful of clunky tips – coins, a few dollars – every couple of days. That dirty 50‑bucks thing? Probably one or two years ago. No pressure, but it’s a nice boost.
More than the cash matters
His own Facebook post? “The real gold isn’t the amount. It’s the heartfelt thanks and the genuine appreciation.”
