COE Latest Tender Results: Singapore’s Transport Market in a Low‑Tide Dip
On Wednesday, the December 5th COE tender saw most premiums slide, reflecting a chilly market that’s not exactly brewing hot coffee for buyers.
Car COEs: A Flat‑Out Foot‑Fall
Cars priced under 1,600 cc and 130 bhp ended up 5.7 % lower at $23,568 – the lowest since March 2010.
For the bigger, more powerful models (over 1,600 cc / 130 bhp), the premium nudged 0.3 % down to $31,001. The Open COE, which is basically a “I’ll take whatever car I want” ticket (mostly for the bigger ones), also slipped slightly to $30,851.
Commercial & Motorcycle COEs: Mixed Signals
Commercial vehicle premiums fell 1.8 % to $27,009 — the usual price drop you’d expect from a lean half‑hour on the highway.
Motorcycles, on the other hand, bucked the trend. Their COE premiums jumped 13.7 % to $3,399 as the lower prices pulled in new buyers from the sidelines.
Dealer Insights: A Murky Market, but No Panic
- Mr Ron Lim, Sales & Marketing Head at Tan Chong Motor (Nissan agent): “The market’s been very weak. Buyers are feeling the uncertainty of 2019.”
- He says Category A buyers (under 1,600 cc) are more “sensitive” to the gloomy outlook.
- Category B (over 1,600 cc) also sees a slight dip, but has a silver lining thanks to the look‑alike ride‑hailing giant, Gojek.
- Even though Gojek doesn’t own assets like Uber did, their dealer partners had to stack a fleet of hybrid cars. Those hybrids, usually Category B, are a hit with drivers who love fuel‑saver perks.
- Lim sums it up: “The market is very buyer-driven. If buyers keep doubting the current prices, premiums will fall even more.”
All in all, the COE tender signposts a market that’s feeling a bit lethargic, but the prices still let folks weigh their options. While some discounts are rising (motorcycles), others are sinking a tad, painting a picture of a market waiting to catch wind before it takes off again.
