Boxing Takes the Spotlight at ONE Championship
Srisaket Sor Rungvisai is gearing up to defend his WBC Super Flyweight title in a match that’s bound to be a headline‑maker. It’s the first boxing bout, and indeed the first world‑championship fight, ever held at a ONE Championship event.
Who’s Srisaket?
- Record: 46 wins, 4 defeats, 1 draw.
- Upcoming Fight: He’ll face WBC Latino Super Flyweight Champion Iran “MagnifiKO” Diaz (14‑2‑3) on Saturday, 6 October in Bangkok.
- Birth Name: Wisaksil Wangek, hailing from the humble province of Sisaket.
From the Grit of Sisaket to the Rings
Life in Sisaket is tough—poverty is rampant. Srisaket’s dad was a pro Muay Thai fighter, but the earnings barely kept the family afloat. At 13, the young fighter packed his bags and moved to Bangkok, hoping for a better income.
He tried his luck as a security guard and a trash collector. Eat? Think again. There were days when the only fresh food he could afford was M&Ms buried in a waste bin.
“I’d go into the trash to get a meal because I was starving.”
But hunger pushed him to weigh in a gym and keep jabbing those bags. For Srisaket, Muay Thai was a mix of passion and pay‑check.
Switching from Thai to Western Boxing
His first forays into boxing were rough—two knockouts in a row. A TKO at the deck, a KO in the second bout. Yet, desperate times called for new strategies. He kept training and, after a stint with Nakornloung Promotion, turned the tide.
- 26 straight wins.
- May 2013: Took the WBC title by beating Japan’s Yota Sato.
- Lost to Mexico’s Carlos Cuadras in May 2014, but bounced back quickly.
- Defeated Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez to reclaim and then defend the title with a stunning fourth‑round knockout.
“I never imagined I’d climb this high. I thought I’d just own a regional belt and maybe get a TV spot.”
He’s now riding a 19‑bout win streak and stepping into ONE Championship with a grin.
Thanks to ONE Championship
“I’ve seen the production and energy from ONE’s Bangkok event earlier this year. The experience blew my mind.”
He’s humbled by the platform and ready to showcase his skills to a global audience.
