Substation\’s Closure Debunked: It’s Still Operational, Lifestyle News

The Substation Doesn’t Go Dark – It Goes 2.0!

After rocking out for 30 years at 45 Armenian Street, the arts hub that’s been Singapore’s creative playground is finally about to do a full‑blown exit. The good news? The Substation is not shutting its doors permanently – it’s just changing the tune.

What’s the New Gig?

  • Windows will close on July 23 for a two‑year renovation of the old building.
  • When the light re‑lights, the venue will transform from a place to host shows to a full‑blown arts company producing its own original programmes.
  • It’s been christened Substation 2.0 – because even a classic needs a remix.
  • The company will have to streamline & reorganize to keep up the pace and lay a new foundation beyond the familiar walls.

Why the Quick Change of Heart?

The board initially in March had said, “We’ll close after we leave because sharing the space would strip our identity.” But a thunderclap from the community, plus the vision of keeping the vibe alive, pushed them back. Chew Kheng Chuan clarified, “We opted for closure to protect heritage, yet the artistic people cried in sync – we were not meant to vanish.”

Power‑Up in August

  • A new board will roll in by month’s end, led by chairperson Wahyuni Hadi.
  • Wahyuni, a film curator and arts manager, said: “Our next chapter is about redefining the Substation as the home base for independent artists – no longer tied to a single building, but expanding it across Singapore and beyond.”
  • “We’re grateful for this new beginning and the community’s relentless support!” she added.

From 1990 to Now

Founded by playwright Kuo Pao Kun in 1990, the Substation started as a haven for experimental drama and has championed local musicians ever since. The last event planned for the old location was the Goo Goo Ga Joob Garage Sale on July 25, but Covid had to put that on hold. Members of the public can still wander by the building for a quick photo op – just no sliding in.

In short, the Substation is taking a bow, but it’s not the end of the show – it’s the premiere of a new act.
