Hold onto Your Hats: 2019’s Super Blood Moon is Coming

When & Where It Pops Up

On Friday night, January 20–21, the heavens align like a perfect dream. Parts of North & South America, Western Europe, and Africa will get front‑row seats to a total lunar eclipse. This isn’t just any eclipse— the moon will be at its closest to Earth, making it look a bit larger and brighter. The result? A dramatic, reddish‑orange glow that turns the Moon into a glowing ruby.

What to Expect from the Show

  • Totality: will start at 9:12 p.m. PST on Jan 20 (1:12 p.m. SGT on Jan 21) and last roughly one hour.
  • Full Experience: from first glow to the final snapback takes a full 3 hours 17 minutes.

Showtimes by City

  • Los Angeles: looks up at about 8:40 p.m. PST to catch the start, and 9:12 p.m. for totality.
  • Iceland (Reykjavík): loses sleep, because the total shine will hit at 4:41 a.m. at 3 a.m., giving early‑birds a chance to brag about “woke at 4 a.m.”
  • … and the rest of the world will have their own timetables, all lined up for the spectacular eclipse.

Looking Ahead

The next grand total lunar eclipse will roll around on May 26, 2021, visible from North & South America and East Asia. So, if you’re not ready to stare at a glowing red moon in 2019, you’ll still have something to brag about a few months later.
