Thai Bus Delivers Vaccines to Bangkok’s Vulnerable Communities – Asia News

Bangkok Takes to the Road: Mobile Vaccine Bus Starts Rolling

On a Sunday in early September, Bangkok’s city hall rolled out a brand‑new mobile vaccination bus that’s aimed at getting seniors and other vulnerable folks a shot without the hassle of a long trip. The city’s pilot program is all about speed – the traffic‑crowded capital’s attempting to catch the Delta wave in its tracks and make sure everyone has a chance to be protected.

Why a Bus?

Every day the crew steps into a spare van, gears up, and heads straight to where people live. “I can’t really travel much, it’s not convenient for me,” 58‑year‑old wheelchair user Manat Phumklahan says, while receiving his first dose. Another resident, 22‑year‑old Boonsak Suwannakij, points out the convenience: “I’m in a risk group living in a red‑zone district, so it’s way easier to have this right here in my community.”

How It Works

The bus runs on a tight crew: one driver, three medics to handle dosage and paperwork, and a couple of other crew members to take care of the admin side. “Once we iron out the details, this bus should keep moving,” says city governor Aswin Kwanmuang. “We’re building more and more of these. The first of its kind.”

  • Daily capacity: 1,000+ people can get jabbed each day
  • Team size: 5–6 people
  • Targeted groups: elderly, wheelchair users, residents in red‑zone districts, any group that has trouble traveling
  • Operational cost minimal – just a small crew and a single van

Data Snapshot

Thailand’s journey to full vaccination has been a steady cruise. Roughly 16.5% of the 72 million residents – across all nationalities – are now fully vaccinated. In total, the country has logged more than 1.3 million infections and 13,500 COVID‑related deaths, with most falls from April onward.

What to Expect Going Forward

As victories pile up, Bangkok’s hopping off the “bus” and maybe onto a “bus fleet.” The city hopes to get each community covered, one stop at a time, making vaccination as easy as a ride. That means if you’re in a red‑zone district or simply a senior who loves comfort, you are in for a ride plus a dose.
