This Sengkang 4-room BTO has a casual-cool, black-and-white theme, Lifestyle News

For their design brief to interior designer Keith Low of Woodworks, the homeowners had three simple words: “black and white”. They left it to Keith to figure out the rest of the aesthetics of this four-room BTO flat in Sengkang.

“We focused on using a monochromatic colour palette at first, but figured the look was too ‘flat’. So, we added warmth by using wood, plants and pops of yellow accents. We also created a sharper look with some wire details, which we incorporated through the furniture,” says Keith. The homeowners, a couple in their 30s, are in the IT and education industry, and needed a study area to keep their items organised.<img alt=""" data-caption="Photo: Home & Decor” data-entity-type=”file” data-entity-uuid=”dc3dc7d2-d842-4202-92e6-6c76e9487fd0″ src=”/sites/default/files/inline-images/3_15.jpg”/>With the help of Keith, the couple purchased many of their items from online site Taobao or Ikea – from furniture to lighting. This shows that you do not necessarily have to spend big to achieve your dream home.<img alt=""" data-caption="Photo: Home & Decor” data-entity-type=”file” data-entity-uuid=”889a5d0c-edf9-4bd2-a39c-26494b756d63″ src=”/sites/default/files/inline-images/4_6.jpg”/>Knick knacks as well as photos and prints are displayed on the shelves, giving the study some colour and playfulness.<img alt=""" data-caption="Photo: Home & Decor” data-entity-type=”file” data-entity-uuid=”9efc1424-d6fe-4481-985f-5dece0e90b4f” src=”/sites/default/files/inline-images/5_2.jpg”/>To keep a sense of openness throughout the home, Keith used lots of glass and mirrors. Furniture with slim profiles also helped.<img alt=""" data-caption="Photo: Home & Decor” data-entity-type=”file” data-entity-uuid=”26fde9dc-2af9-4d41-ae24-c99ef6faf8c6″ src=”/sites/default/files/inline-images/6_2.jpg”/>The renovation cost, which totals to $45,000, included the kitchen cabinetry as well as the bathrooms. Keith opted for an all-black look – down to the cabinetry handles and refrigerator!<img alt=""" data-caption="Photo: Home & Decor” data-entity-type=”file” data-entity-uuid=”feeae2ee-e876-46de-a92f-fb24d3585c1b” src=”/sites/default/files/inline-images/7_0.jpg”/>In the bedroom, graphic prints and a splash of yellow help create a uniformed design language.<img alt=""" data-caption="Photo: Home & Decor” data-entity-type=”file” data-entity-uuid=”e50eac91-f4ec-4111-b5e0-5a70e125da55″ src=”/sites/default/files/inline-images/8_0.jpg”/>The theme follows through even in the bathroom, where a marble-look tile adds a touch of sophistication to the otherwise casual home.<img alt=""" data-caption="Photo: Home & Decor” data-entity-type=”file” data-entity-uuid=”36887c1e-a238-4c7f-8bb3-f49f76106870″ src=”/sites/default/files/inline-images/9_0.jpg”/>This article was first published in Home & Decor.
