Waukesha’s Christmas Parade Tragedy: A Tragic Day and Its Aftermath

It feels like a bad dream that turned into real‑life horror. During a festive parade in Waukesha, a car was carelessly driven straight through and the city lost six people, including an 8‑year‑old child who became the first young victim.

Justice Delayed but Deadly

On Tuesday, November 23, 2023, Darrell Brooks (39) was pulled into the courtroom to face homicide charges. He’s now facing five counts of first‑degree intentional homicide, each one a heavy weight on his upcoming trial.

Earlier, the city lifted his bail to a staggering $5 million (about SG$6.8 million) after his previous $1,000 bond was judged ridiculously low for the peril he created.

Brooks allegedly intentionally driven his SUV through police barricades on Sunday, smashing into the parade route—roughly 32 km west of Milwaukee. His criminal résumé stretches over three states, and prosecutors say more charges are on the way.

More Than 60 Injured—Kids, Grannies, and the Whole City

While the grief is already heavy, the pain spreads far beyond the fatal victims:

  • Over 60 people sustained injuries.
  • At least 18 children suffered bruises, broken bones, and scary head injuries, many rushed to the Wisconsin Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee—some still in critical care, others already home.
  • Members of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies marched in, few of whom survived as wounded participants.

The Dancing Grannies group grieved on Facebook: “Our hearts are heavy over the loss of our grannies and volunteer,” they wrote, noting a few injured members are stable and one has left the hospital.

Holding Offices: Tweets, Presidents, Popes, and Vigils

President Joe Biden called the attack “horrific.” “It’s a reminder that people can do terrible things when they’re in the wrong mind state,” he said. Meanwhile, the Vatican sent a condolence message to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Milwaukee, offering prayers for the souls who passed away and healings for the wounded.

One of the vigils on Monday featured Jeremy Wittig, 39, IT professional, proclaiming: “Waukesha is strong. That’s why we are out here.”

What Happened On the Night

Video footage on social media captured a red SUV racing toward the parade then careening in. Bystanders swarmed to help while the driver braved the chaos. Here’s what a Waukesha resident, Brian Hoffman, 33, told us:

“I saw children who were run over. I’m still totally shocked.”

Even though the police didn’t chase the driver initially, Waukesha police Chief Daniel Thompson said an officer fired a gun to try to stop the SUV.

Brooks’ Background: One More Low‑Bail Case

On November 5, Brooks was parallexed with several misdemeanor charges: obstructing an officer, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, and felony bail‑jumping tied to a domestic abuse case. He posted a $1,000 bond for that earlier case, but prosecutors say it was too small given what he now faces.

Just before the Sunday chaos, police were alerted to a domestic disturbance involving Brooks and a knife. This propped up concerns that he could act violently.

What’s clear is that Waukesha has a big heart, but the bright light of its Christmas parade was suddenly that too, as a dark reality set in. The city—along with local families, church leaders, the government, and the broader community—faces a long way forward in healing and seeking justice.
