Hi There, Covid! But for Secretary Mayorkas, it’s a “Pretty Mild” Surprise
Who is the guy who just caught the virus? It’s Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the U.S. Homeland Security boss. Even though he’s fully vaccinated, the virus slipped in.
What Went Down?
On Tuesday morning, October 19, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) tweeted:
- “Secretary Mayorkas tested positive for Covid‑19 this morning after a routine pre‑travel test.”
- “He’s dealing with just a little congestion — nothing severe.”
- “Fully vaccinated, he’ll isolate at home following CDC rules and medical advice.”
- “Contact tracing is underway.”
So, yep, the numbers are there, but it looks like his case is one of those mild “breakthrough” infections that most vaccinated folks end up with these days.
Travel Plans? Whoa, Back to the Couch!
He was originally set to jet off to Colombia alongside Secretary of State Antony Blinken. But with Covid on his side, he’s swapped the plane for a comfy home office.
Why the Delta Variant Isn’t a Bad Guy for Everybody
The Delta strain is notoriously contagious, but research shows that fully vaccinated people usually get the “injury” only in a mild fashion — no hospital stays, no big worries. That’s exactly what’s happening here.
Throwback: A Brief Note on Colin Powell
While we’re at it, a quick reminder that former Secretary of State Colin Powell also fell victim to Covid complications before passing away.
