WHO Chief Calls for Tokyo Olympics to Go Ahead

“A Global Celebration of Hope”

On Wednesday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director‑General, told the International Olympic Committee in Tokyo that the Games should proceed, arguing they’re a chance to showcase what can be achieved with the right strategy during the pandemic.

He lifted a torch in a symbolic gesture, saying, “May these rays of hope from this land herald a brighter, healthier, and fairer world.”

Key Points from Tedros

  • Olympics can unite people, inspire them, and prove that great feats are possible.
  • Vaccines should be shared fairly—rather than hoarded by a lucky few.
  • We already possess the tools—tests, treatments, and prevention methods—to finish the pandemic.

Tokyo’s Safety Concerns

Japan, with only about 34 % of its population fully vaccinated, worries the Games could spark a surge. Consequently, events will be held in empty arenas to curb risk.

Since July 1, 67 accredited attendees have tested positive, despite rigorous entry protocols. Meanwhile, Tokyo recorded 1,387 new cases on Tuesday, while the country has tallied over 840,000 infections and more than 15,000 deaths.

Looking Ahead

With the Games kicking off on July 23, the world watches closely—hopeful there’ll be turns of the torch that light the way forward.
