Wuhan’s First Makeshift Hospital Says Goodbye
The huge emergency blanket that was once the beating heart of Wuhan’s fight against the coronavirus has finally folded its curtains. After the last 34 patients walked out, the makeshift hospital shut down – by the time of the news, the city was already feeling a major drop in new infections.
New Numbers: The Good, The Bad, and The “We’re Almost Done”
- Hubei Province: 196 new confirmed cases on Sunday – the lowest since January 24.
- Wuhan City: 193 new infections – the lowest since January 26.
- Mainland China: 202 new cases – the lowest since January 22.
- Deaths: 2,912 total as of Sunday, a rise of 42 deaths.
Outside Hubei, just six new cases popped up across the rest of mainland China – a figure that hasn’t been seen since last month.
Hospital Bed Boom
Since the start of the emergency, Wuhan has sprung up 16 temporary hospitals, giving the city 13,000 extra beds. A total of 12,000 patients have already been treated, and overall bed capacity has jumped from 5,000 to a staggering 23,000.
China’s Response Levels are Sliding Down
In the last week, 18 provinces have eased their urgency. Zhejiang province, for example, moved from an all‑out Level I to the slightly calmer Level II. In China’s 4‑tier system, Level I is the most intense.
Watch Out – The Virus Is Still Juking Around
President Xi reminds everyone that it’s a long road. Recently two Chinese citizens who flew back from Iran tested positive, and another case from Italy shows the virus still has a way to roam. The Global Times added a bit more heat to the story with an imported case in Zhejiang.
Bottom Line: The Tide is Turning
Everyone’s breathing easier, the hospitals are winding down, and the numbers are dropping. But the planet remains on guard. Keep your eyes peeled, stay curious, and let’s all have a little chuckle at how far we’ve come.
