Can’t Sing, but Still Up for a Show? Pearl Jam Cancels Vienna Gig
London — Looks like the 13‑hour marathon of open‑air concerts has finally caught up with Pearl Jam. The U.S. rockers dropped their Vienna date on Wednesday, July 20 after singer Eddie Vedder had to put his voice on hold. Heat, dust, and a sneaky bit of smoke from the wildfires just outside Paris did the job of destroying his vocal cords.
What Went Wrong?
The band posted a heartfelt apology on Instagram:
- “We were all gearing up for a killer show in Vienna,” the statement began, but the last outdoor stop near Paris took a beating.
- “Due to the heat, dust, and smoke, Eddie’s throat was damaged. He’s seen doctors, gotten treatment, but the cords aren’t healing yet.”
- “It’s brutal news and a terrible time for everyone involved.”
It turns out the theater‑rustle error happened during a weekend of Lollapalooza Paris amidst a scorching heat wave, with temperatures jumping well above 40 °C in southern Europe. Those flames and scorching summer air had a side effect: Eddie’s vocal cords, like a fragile marionette, lost the strings needed to sing.
Europe’s Burning Up (Literally)
Firefighters in southwestern France have been on the front lines since July 12, trying to wrangle enormous forest fires. Against this backdrop, Britain recorded its highest ever temperature on Tuesday. The combination of heat and pollution created a recipe that’s too hot for even rock gods.
What the Band Is Saying
“Those who work hard to put on shows and those who give their precious time and energy to attend — you’re very important to us. As a band we’re deeply sorry and have tried to find options to still play,” Pearl Jam wrote.
“And Eddie wants to play. There’s no throat available at this time, so we’re profoundly sorry.”
Refunds and the Next Stop
Tickets for the Vienna concert will be refunded. The European tour will pick up again in Prague on Friday, but it’s still unclear if Eddie can be back on stage.
For now, fans get to enjoy the next chapter of this legendary band’s journey and hope that Eddie’s voice is as revitalized as his spirit.
