After 58 Years, a Boy from Singapore Reunites with His Adopted Sister in Malaysia

It All Began With a Knot of Determination

Mr Ling Kok Ong, 66, hopped across the sea from Singapore to Bukit Payong, Terengganu to meet his late‑adopted sister, Hamsiah Mohamad, 58. The long‑ago family split had left nothing but a yearning—and a clue from the Malaysian History Association in Dungun.

Why It Matters

“Even though we were separated, our family—especially my mother and late dad—always thought about Hamsiah,” Mr Ling recalled. “I came to Terengganu to fulfil my mother’s wish of seeing her again.”

The Origin Story

  • Hamsiah was the sixth of seven siblings in the biological family.
  • She was adopted at birth by a childless Malay couple in Bukit Besi, Dungun.
  • The family moved away after their adoptive father passed, leaving the siblings disconnected.

From Losing to Reaching Out

During a mid‑August search, Mr Ling came up empty—but a miracle happened when Advocate Wan Mohd Rosli Wan Ngah, the honorary secretary of the Dungun Historical Association, stepped in.

Several association members knew Hamsiah’s nephew and were able to put Mr Ling in touch with his long‑lost sister.

The Big Reunion

  • Location: Hamsiah’s eatery in Taman Tasek, Bukit Payong (just an hour from their childhood village).
  • Attendance: Mr Ling, his 62‑year‑old wife Josephine Ng, and the two‑kid‑loving Hamsiah.
  • Time: 10 am on a sunny Sunday.

Emotions, Surprises, and Family Love

Hamsiah admitted she’d only learned about adoption at 15 and never expected to meet her biological family. “I never thought I’d see them again because, well, I didn’t know they existed,” she said.

She added that her adoptive parents treated her like their own child—making the reunion all the more heartwarming.

Mr Ling’s New Plan

Now, he intends to bring his mother to see her long‑lost daughter, bringing closure to a family that’s been on the edge of separation for nearly six decades.

How wonderful it is when a story that began with a split ends with a hug—proof that family is more than just blood; it’s also fate waiting to happen.
